Colombian skater Jazmín Alvarez Bedoya, 21, was surprised on Friday night by winning the Dew Tour Women’s Street Open Qualifier and earning one of 23 transfer spots into Saturday’s Semifinal.
Alvarez was ranked 58th in the World Skate rankings prior to this week, but will now be one to watch as the qualifiers meet the pre-seeded skaters for the Semifinal. She took an early lead in Run 1 of Heat 1, and held onto it through all three heats.
“Toda la gloria es para Dios,” she wrote on Instagram after the contest, dedicating the result to God.
Though she’s not well known internationally, Alvarez is the back-to-back Colombian national champion from 2019 and 2021; the 2021 national championships were held in Bogotá in March.
Momiji Nishiya (Japan), Poe Pinson (USA), Nanaka Fujisawa (Japan), and Samarria Brevard (USA) rounded out the top 5.
