Who’s the best all-around freeskier in the world? If you take a poll around the industry, you’re sure to get at least a few votes for Gus Kenworthy. That’s because he excels in all three freeskiing disciplines — halfpipe, slopestyle and big air. It used to be commonplace for skiers to participate in multiple events, but progression has become so demanding that most skiers have been forced to pick a specialty. But somehow Kenworthy has found a way to balance all of it, as he has been crowned the AFP’s overall champion for seven consecutive years dating back to 2011.
In 2014, Kenworthy narrowly missed the cut for the U.S. Olympic halfpipe team, but he earned his way onto the slopestyle team. In Sochi, he earned a silver medal as part of a U.S. podium sweep with Joss Christensen and Nick Goepper. It was just the third time that the U.S. had ever swept a podium at a Winter Olympics in any event.
Beyond his silver medal, Kenworthy also became a social media sensation when he found a group of stray puppies on the streets of Sochi.
In 2018, Kenworthy hopes to become the first openly gay man to compete in the Winter Olympics.
