Hailing from Hailey, Idaho, resting on the middle finger of Chase Josey’s left hand, came one of two rings that he regularly wears. It was a custom ring, and Josey knew the jeweler personally.

“I know the jeweler,” confirmed Josey, “My dad’s good friend.”

“You have to do what feels right. Sometimes that’s a pizza at night.”—Chase Josey

Josey had been in town for two weeks, Breckenridge for one night and before that near Copper for the Grand Prix. On his right hand he donned a second ring. It was his Olympic ring from PyeongChang, South Korea.

“We’ve been doing a lot of cooking at home, Jake [Pates] and Gabe [Ferguson],” said Josey, in response to being questioned about his road diet. “Nothing super regimented, you have to do what feels right. Sometimes that’s a pizza at night,” he laughed.

Nearly hidden behind the athlete wristband for Dew Tour, Josey had on tiny, but colorful, bracelet that he bought off some “crazy bird guy” in Milan.

“This guy puts corn in your hands, then all the birds fly up onto you,” explained Josey, while twisting the fabric around his wrist. “Then, he asks for money afterward and you’re like ‘…’ Yeah, that was crazy.”

Josey confirmed him and the boys were also sticking to another light routine crafted by a physical trainer at U.S. Snowboarding while on the road, too. Essentially they had a squat and lunge circuit to warmup with before riding to get their knees and hips primed. Then, they were instructed to end the day with light gym session and hot tub.

“It’s all just to feel good,” confessed Josey.

An iPhone 8 was drawn out of his pockets, but it was in housed in “pretty busted” blue case. Josey recognized that he needed a new one, saying that the one he was rocking was only “decent.” He made up for appearances with his Coach wallet.

It was small, black and leather. Just big enough to hold some cards, cash and the Idaho State ID that Josey required. Unlike the phone case, Josey showed pride in his wallet of choice.

“We are finishing off with the doob’ tube. You’ve got to stay ready,” declared Josey as he revealed his last piece pocket lint. “It’s actually empty right now, but it did have some spliffs in there…”

At that point, the interview was all but laughed off as Josey started to pack up his pockets. Then, we asked one more question. What did he expect for this year’s Modified Superpipe event?

“I think it’s going to be really rad,” Josey said with heightened awareness. “I haven’t gotten full eyes on it yet, only from a distance. I’m stoked to get in there and practice. It is going to be fun.”
